TOWNSEND— Town officials are taking residents’ desire to be “green” to the next level. They’ve teamed up with an organic lawn-care company for a two-year deal that will ensure no pesticides or chemicals are used on town lawns, parks and common areas.
After a presentation to residents by Beyond Pesticides, Northeast Organic Farmers Association and the Ecological Landscape Association, selectmen approved in March the implementation of the program.
Yard Spice Organics, along with supplier, Bradfield Organics LLC, donated their services and products to the town during the first year of service. A $3,500 grant will fund a second year of service.
“I would say the people of Townsend have a high degree of environmental consciousness,” said Gregory Barnes, town administrator. “Over 30 percent of our land area is protracted open space.”
